Lonely at the Top

Lonely at the Top

by Michael Feeley January 22, 2024

MANY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE (executives, politicians, and artists) feel lonely at the top – an enormous sense of isolation and pressure of being the decision-maker. It’s not easy being a leader.

Albert Einstein notes – “It is strange to be known universally and yet be so lonely.”

Many CEOs say being unknown and alone is part of the job of a leader, and they carry the burden as a trophy. They use their responsibilities to be cold and removed from the feelings of those who work for them and the company.

– What if you feel alone because of your choices and not your high-ranking job?

– How much are you personally responsible for your isolation and disconnect?

– How does feeling alone affect your confidence and decision-making?

Loneliness researcher John T. Cacioppo wrote about the importance of social connection, love, and the disconnect between public and private.

I have written about you and me – individual and collective – self and world – personal loneliness amid social attention, and how we are all connected even when we think we are alone.

A survey conducted by The Center for Leadership Development – Stanford Graduate School of Business Management states

“Nearly two-thirds of CEOs do not receive coaching or leadership advice… what’s interesting is that nearly 100% of CEOs in the survey responded that they actually enjoy the process of receiving coaching…”David F. Larcker

CEOs don’t need to ‘go it alone.’ You have a choice. You can change and improve with the skills and expertise of an executive coach who can become a trusted advisor; just because you become CEO doesn’t guarantee you have all the answers.

Executive Coaching is a standard of learning and growth, not a weakness, not something remedial, but rather a strength and wisdom that can make you the significant leader you desire to be.

Coaching enables leaders to improve a leader’s mentoring skills and talent development and attraction.

Some of the most outstanding success Executive Coaching offers is the encouragement of empathy – genuine care about the people you work with – understanding and seeing people for who they are and their possibilities. It’s challenging work. It is not an easy rope to balance on between professional and personal. However, empathy is a crucial choice for building enrollment, success, and profits.

Matched with empathy is gratitude – the unlimited potential and ability to say ‘Thank You,’ honestly praising and celebrating people’s lives and their work commitment. Gratitude is mighty potent stuff. It’s pragmatic optimism, enthusiasm, freedom, strength and generosity.

– If people feel their CEO or boss respects, knows, and values them as human beings and their specific work, how hard do you think they will work to make the CEO, their boss, the firm, and themselves successful, and how loyal will they be?

– How essential is it for a CEO to sincerely build connections?

– What happens when you surround yourself with trusted people – a trusted community?

– How will deep listening, awareness, and constructive positive feedback affect others and yourself?

– The choices you make as a leader affect everyone connected with your organization. How will you choose to serve the people in your firm and outside?

– How will the smart choice to hire an Executive Coach create the change you want, solve problems, answer questions, and get the enhancing results you need for your life and work?
