Known – Unknown

Known – Unknown

by Michael Feeley July 26, 2026

“Un.” Two letters. That’s all it takes. Add this small prefix to “known,” and the whole word turns inside out. Unknown. It’s not wordplay. It’s a small mechanism with enormous reach that creates change.

We treat “known” as solid ground. The unknown as the shaky part, the thing to plan around, brace for. But look closer. The known is not as fixed as you think. And the unknown is not as empty.

Out in the world, this is obvious. New places, new facts, new people. Territory waiting to be mapped. But turn it inward, and it gets more interesting. You are also known and unknown. You know your habits, your history, your usual self. That’s the known you.

But there’s an unknown you too. Not hidden but unarrived. A capacity you haven’t tested. A reaction you haven’t had yet. A strength that only shows up under pressure you haven’t faced.

The unknown doesn’t stay unknown forever. It converts. Something happens — a loss, a dare, an ordinary Tuesday and the unknown becomes known, whether you were ready or not.

So the deep, fun, real question isn’t what I don’t know, but am I still willing to be surprised by myself?

Welcome the unknow. Seek it out. It’s friendlier than you know.
