Goodwill is a Choice

by Michael Feeley
Goodwill is the hope that good things happen to others, the desire to know what those good things are, and the action to make them happen.
The choice for goodwill is in the word will—your free will, your decision to know and understand, and then freely act.
To do good.
To be good.
To have a good hope, good intention, and good purpose.
To willingly and willfully try to have a good effect on someone or something without putting your interest first.
Goodwill is fierce. It can mean No! Standing up for what is right, fair, and just.
Here are some relevant quotes by wise people on this matter of good that I respect and learn from:
“I’m convinced of this: Good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they’re stones that don’t matter. As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late to do some good.”
– Maya Angelou
“Every man is guilty of all the good he did not do.” – Voltaire
“Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.” – Plato
“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
– Mahatma Gandhi
“In a time of domestic crisis, men of goodwill and generosity should be able to unite regardless of party or politics.”
– John F. Kennedy
