Buy-In and Payoff
by Michael Feeley
Buy-in and payoff are related. There is a difference. It’s an important one.
Buy-in comes first. It’s a leap of faith. A person hires me as a coach to help them make a change — to achieve something they cannot do alone. They buy into my skills, my experience. Before there’s any proof.
Payoff comes after. If they do the work, they get what they want. They move from where they are to where they want to be. Change happens.
Buy-in is a promise. Payoff is the promise kept.
You can’t skip either one. Ask for buy-in without ever delivering payoff, and trust breaks — for good. Chase payoff without earning buy-in, and no one shows up to do the work.
Trust holds the two together. I trust my work. They trust me enough to start — and then to stay.
