Yale Confirmed It. You Are Not Declining. You Are Deepening
by Michael Feeley
How you think about ageing determines how you age. The choices you make — daily, deliberately, without waiting for anyone’s permission — are the single greatest factor in whether your later years diminish you or deepen you. This is not wishful thinking. This is not motivational rhetoric. This is what I believe, teach, and live through with Sagerism and The Vintage Way for years.
A study published in March 2026 in the journal Geriatrics, led by Dr. Becca Levy at the Yale School of Public Health, tracked more than 11,000 adults over 12 years. Nearly half — 45% — of adults over 65 actually got better. Not held steady. Better. Stronger walking speed. Sharper cognition. Measurable, documented gains.
Dr. Levy calls the mechanism “reserve capacity” — a hidden tank of cognitive and physical potential that most people never tap.
I’ve been calling it Vintageness.
We are living in an extraordinary moment. For the first time in modern history, maturing adults are being seriously studied, rigorously examined, and genuinely respected — not cut out of the conversation, not cut in front of, not quietly dismissed as yesterday’s people. Researchers like Dr. Levy are looking directly at us and saying: we got this wrong, and the truth is far more remarkable. That is long overdue.
Ageing is not a dying off. It is a blooming. The finest wines don’t peak at harvest. The most extraordinary human lives don’t peak at forty. Ageing is the opportunity to flourish into everything you have spent a lifetime becoming.
Science confirms another piece of this truth: crystallized intelligence. Unlike fluid intelligence, which peaks in early adulthood, crystallized intelligence — the accumulated wisdom, pattern recognition, and depth of understanding built across a lifetime — continues to grow with age. A Sager is not working with less. A Sager is working with more.
Consider Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. One of the most celebrated operatic sopranos in history, she gave her final performance at 72 and announced her retirement at 73. She is now 82 and more alive in her purpose than ever — pouring decades of hard-won mastery into the next generation of singers through her foundation. When asked about retirement she said simply:
“When you retire you die. I have not died just yet.” That is a Sager speaking. It’s Vintage Potential. That is The Vintage Thread.
Dr. Levy’s most powerful finding — independent of age, health status, and education — was this: people who viewed ageing as a time of growth showed real, measurable gains. That is the entire foundation of Sagerism… becoming vintage.
Every Sager knows five words in their bones that carry more vitality than any anti-ageing product ever sold:
I Am Not Done Yet.
Yale is not giving people permission to age differently. Yale is confirming what many of us have been saying — and living — for years. Science validates. Philosophy leads.
You are not declining. You are deepening.
