Vintage Integrity
by Michael Feeley
I want to talk about living one way.
Not one way when it’s convenient. Not one way when people are watching. One way. All the time. No matter what.
That is integrity. And here is what I believe happens to it as we age.
It does not get weaker. It gets resolute. It gets tempered. It becomes the thing you stand on when everything else shifts beneath your feet.
Vintage Integrity is not something you inherit or stumble into. It is built. Day by day, choice by choice, over a lifetime of deciding — sometimes against real resistance, sometimes at real cost — to stay true to yourself and to others. To not harm. To help. To be the same person in the dark that you are in the light.
Living one way means your private self and your public self are the same person.
No performance. No compromise of principle for comfort or applause. What you believe, you live. What you say, you do. This is not perfection — it is commitment. Renewed every morning. Worked at every day. Always.
Here is what I know about getting older:
The mirror knows everything. It has been there for all of it. Every choice you made when no one was looking. Every moment you held your ground or let yourself down. You cannot revise your history in front of that mirror. You can learn from it. You stand there and know. Self to self. I AM.
I want to stand at that mirror and say:
I never sold myself out. I never insulted my own principles. I was not always right. But I was always trying to be honest. I was always trying to be good. Just and fair. I learned things and continue to learn from all I do and feel.
That is what Vintage Integrity asks. Not sainthood. Sincerity.
As we sage, our values do not soften out of weariness. For a Sager, they sharpen. We have lost enough, triumphed enough, loved enough to understand that the only life worth living is the one we can honestly claim as our own.
And here is the great gift:
Vintage Integrity no longer asks for your effort. It runs you. Practiced long enough, faithfully enough, it becomes the operating force of your life.
Every day you choose it, it goes a little deeper into the bone and the heart.
