Try or Sabotage Your Self
by Michael Feeley
MANY PEOPLE SABOTAGE themselves from changing jobs and building the vocation they dream about because their inner critic beats them down into believing – “No one sees your value. You’re not worth it. You will never amount to anything.” It’s a painful and comfortable excuse to stay stuck, to hide out, and to build a case against the world.
Here are some of the stories I hear from people I coach:
– Someone stole my idea…
– All the successful businesses are already open…
– It’s been done…
– I can’t compete with…
– There are thousands of books on the subject…
– I need to go back to school first…
– I haven’t paid my dues…
– I don’t have time…
– It takes too much time…
– I don’t have the money…
– It’s been done…
– I’m not an expert…
– I’d be plagiarizing…
– I’m not smart enough…
– I’m an amateur…
– I can’t make a living…
– I tried…
– I’m too old…
– I’m too young…
What is the truth?
Should there only be one Starbucks – one Walgreens – one Domino’s Pizza – one BlackRock – one Uber – one How to Book – one college – one pool service – one tailor – one internet café – one cleaning service – one small luxury hotel – one coach – one real estate company – one airline – one soprano – one clothes designer?
You’re original. One of a kind, your idea, and your work are the same and different from your competitors. That’s perfectly OK. They are alternatives to you, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be wildly successful and be people’s first choice.
We serve and create by what came before us – who came before us – and what is working now.
You have value, so produce and invent with your brand of value.
Sure – someone will dare and come up with something that clicks with people and spreads like crazy. But what choice will you make? To close down or to be inspired?
So I ask you:
> How big is the world?
> How many people are in the world?
> How many do you think are looking for what you have to offer that will help and change them?
> Out of the 7.888 billion people in the world, how many do you think you need to be successful?
Every day, serve, create, ship, and watch what happens.
Will you try or not?
