The Honest Agenda
by Michael Feeley
Everyone has an agenda. Good or bad.
The honest move is to say it out loud, right away — not to act like you’re doing someone a favor while quietly serving your own interest.
“I have someone who is looking to buy a house, and I’d like to show them yours. If it sells, I earn a commission — and you walk away with a buyer who’s ready and serious.” That’s not a confession. That’s just the truth, said plainly, instead of dressed up as pure selflessness.
Compare that to the version some of us default to: “I borrowed your mirror while you were away. I figured you wouldn’t mind, and besides, you have another, and I do so much for you.” That’s not honesty. That’s an excuse for taking something, delivered after the fact.
Real directness names your interest before you act, so the other person can decide with open eyes what to do. It doesn’t rewrite a wrong into a virtue.
The question worth asking yourself:
Where have you been the realtor — and where have you been the one with the mirror?
