Antifragile
by Michael Feeley
Call me fragile and watch how fast I push back. Something in me rejects that word completely. I’ve spent a career, and a life, proving the opposite. I just didn’t have a name for it until now. Antifragile.
New word, new idea, worth sitting with. A fragile thing breaks under pressure. A resilient, robust thing survives it, holds its shape.
Here’s the thrilling thing. An antifragile thing does something more: it gets stronger because of the pressure, the way a muscle grows only when you resist it. Take the stress away, and instead of staying the same, the thing weakens. Growth requires the very disorder we’re taught to avoid.
I lived this before I could explain it. In outside sales, I was one of many, all chasing the same territory, measured every single week — new clients, high numbers, a manager watching. The pressure was constant. I didn’t wilt. I came alive. The harder they pushed, the more I produced. I went after the toughest accounts on purpose, because winning the easy ones proves little. Later, as a headhunter, I built a reputation for filling the impossible jobs everyone else had given up on. That wasn’t luck. That was commitment and stamina, a producer built by pressure, not despite it. Antifragile.
I’m proving it again right now. I’ve accepted a challenge to create a real estate video. Something I have almost no experience with. I could have backed away. Instead, I’m on deck for it, ready to learn as I go. That’s what antifragile looks like in real time, not just looking back.
You’ve likely felt this too, somewhere — a deadline, a difficult year, a challenge you didn’t choose that ended up making you sharper, more yourself, not smaller. That’s the same instinct in you, whether or not you’ve named it.
Where are you antifragile?
