Skip Your Back Up Plan!
by Michael Feeley
I believe you should go after your dream – ‘full speed ahead.’ Doing whatever it takes to achieve it but only if it is achievable.
That means knowing what you want – committing to a real plan with strategy and logical steps – hard work – common sense – lots of heart – risk taking – masses of creativity and belief in yourself. Without a plan (and all these essential add-ins)
it is just too easy to give up.
American abolitionist hero Harriet Tubman had a dream that people should live free – “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
Walt Disney – “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”
Mark Twain – “Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
It’s scary to go after a dream
Scary to make change because we don’t know what will be. The unknown is scary but… it can also be enticing.
I think the greatest fear we have, as we day dream and plan, is the fear of failing and that also means fear of not trying.
How scary is it not to try? How heart breaking too!
You and your dream will be criticized for sure and maybe even laughed at and you can get through this fear by knowing yourself. Seeing what works and what doesn’t work and if you fail – start again. Reset yourself and your goals to help get closer to making your dream a reality.
Skip the back up plan
Some people think it’s fine to go after a dream but – to have a ‘back-up plan’. Something to ‘fall back on’. I don’t believe in that!
I hate the idea and words and the talk of it because it creates fear that you won’t make it. The insulting, destructive idea that you can’t do it so be ready to do something else.
The ‘back-up’ idea gives you a way out. Weakens your commitment.
You send yourself a message of doubt and inadequacy… “You’re not sure you can do this but that’s OK. You have a 2nd choice lurking in the shadows. Plan B. An easy way out of your aspirations and right into disappointment and mediocrity.
Abandoning your precious hopes and wishes.
When you walk away from your dream, away from what you love, you’re banging shut a door on your potential.
Interfering with and ignoring who you are meant to be. Born to be. Is that what you want?
Give yourself 100 percent to your dream. It takes immense courage and conviction and isn’t that what we’re here for?
To dream and live! You must act to accomplish great things and one of those great things is your dream.
