Sage-ing Champions

by Michael Feeley
At 105, Virginia ‘Ginny’ Oliver still hauls lobster traps before dawn in Penobscot Bay, Maine’s frigid waters.
At 94, Warren Buffett still leads one of the world’s largest companies, Berkshire Hathaway.
These aren’t exceptions – they’re some of my sage-ing champions.
People do thrive as they age, showing both the wisdom that comes with aging and the continued vitality and achievement of older adults. They challenge ageist assumptions while celebrating human potential in a way that feels realistic and aspirational.
Individuals who are excelling later in life, exploring the mindset and practices that keep people flourishing as they age, their goals, achievements, and contributions across different fields.
They inspire and teach us about living our best life and embracing age, rather than quitting and fading away or being diminished. They keep giving back and helping others, maintaining and creating their next act. They’re relevant. They matter. They have a positive mindset that brings joy to life.
Here are some more of my sage-ing champions:
Veena Grover – in her 80s, flows through poses with students a third her age, teaching yoga in California
Carmen Dell’Orefice – 93, a supermodel still gracing magazine covers with silver hair that defies every fashion industry rule, challenging ageism in fashion.
Joe Bongiovanni – 75, a lifeguard at Asbury Park, New Jersey, who scans the waves with eyes and strength that have protected swimmers for decades.
Jane Fonda – 87, activist and actor who says – “I’m Not Done Yet!”
Katalin Kariko – 70, awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Halle Berry – 58, actor, who advocates for menopause as “her greatest act.”
Martha Argerich – 83, a concert pianist, still touring and performing at the highest level with superlative skills and repertoire.
Marshall Goldsmith – 76, Executive leadership coach and author who continues to give his knowledge generously to others around the world.
Who do you know and respect as a sage-ing champion – someone who refuses to let age define their limits and continues creating their next act?
Thanks – Michael (he, him)
