Rekindle Unused Skills

Rekindle Unused Skills

by Michael Feeley July 30, 2024

What skills do you have in your toolbox that you have not used but may suddenly be required to renew?

Things happen, and emergencies are an opportunity to revisit your old skills (friends of yours), which are resting and ready to go when needed. Look at what needs to be done, start doing the work, and… face Resistance, which is most likely hammering at you that you’re going to mess things up big time!

You’ll see how quickly your knowledge and abilities come back and how grateful you are to have them, even while rekindling and learning new things.

Here’s what happened to me. Unfortunately, the person who cleaned my pool is ill. The backup person didn’t know how the mechanical system worked, so… I went back to the instruction book, WhatsApped a few people, faced the computerized motor flashing lights, electrical boxes, and wires, embraced the filter, the vacuum, hose, attachments, and all kinds of knobs and water valves, and started fresh to clean the pool—something I have not done in years. After a few hours of labor, the pool is on its way to sparkling again.

What have I learned?

Trust yourself. You can achieve more than you expected.

Trust and value your skills, experience, and desire to succeed.

Don’t be complacent. Ensure other people are qualified to be a backup. Meet them, have their contact information, and stay current, ready to act for yourself if necessary.

And – some prayers to the angels and pool gods help plus a few good curse words screamed at the top of your lungs can be very relaxing.

(Yes. The photo is my new friend – my pool pump.)
