The Seam Between Things

The Seam Between Things

by Michael Feeley August 10, 2026

We rush from one task to the next. A list gets made, chores get checked off, and we leap, barely noticing the seam where one thing ends and another begins.

I want to make the case for valuing that seam.

Try this: before moving from one piece of work to the next, pause for just a few minutes. Put yourself on hold. Feel what you’re leaving. Feel what you’re heading into. Let the shift register in your mind, your body, your heart, not just your calendar.

This pause is respect. Respect for the work you just finished, and respect for what’s about to ask something different of you.

One place I do this daily is when I move from writing and publishing my Blog to studying French. The two could not be more different. One is decades of accumulated voice, the other is halting, humbling beginner’s effort. If I leaped straight from one to the other, I’d carry the wrong mindset into the wrong task. So instead, I pause. Sometimes I even talk it through out loud, naming what I’m closing, naming what I’m opening. The transition becomes its own small ritual.

Try it today. Between two things you do, pause. Notice the change. Be grateful for it.

Change itself is evidence you’re still moving, still capable, still here.

See what difference it makes.
