No One Can Do What He Does
by Michael Feeley
Careful. That sentence sounds like praise. It might be accurate, but it can also be an excuse.
Some people hide behind another person’s reputation. ‘He handles that. She knows everyone.’ And they never discover what they themselves might do.
The concierge who became the most sought-after in the hotel started by running errands. He learned the car rental tricks, the cancelled flight workarounds, the wine merchants, the officials who answer on Sunday. He built it. Connection by connection. Favor by favor.
But here’s what drove all of it. He loved the work. Not the title. Not the praise. The work itself. That was the whole secret.
No one is born remarkable or indispensable. They become remarkable. They earn indispensable. And the only way there is through genuine love for what you do. Also, effort and practice, take action, and try to build something you’re proud of.
And here’s the part the alpha dog forgets — there is always another dog right behind. Hungrier. Watching. Ready to step up if given the chance.
Stay arrogant at your own risk.
The question was never what he can do.
It’s what you haven’t tried yet.
Thanks – Michael (he, him)
