Familiar Gratitude
by Michael Feeley
Some gratitude is new — a surprise, a gift unearned. But there is another kind: familiar gratitude. I have been here before. I return, not because I must, but because it matters.
Every day I am grateful for my partner. 31 years now. Not routine. Not rote. Familiar in the truest sense: I know this trust. I know this honesty, this care, this love. And because I know it, I feel this familiar gratitude more, not less.
The same is true when I sit to write my Daily. The thanks I feel is familiar too — and still it arrives fresh, still it matters to me and others who follow my work.
Familiar gratitude is not a cop-out. It is not settling. It is strength. The kind that comes from repetition, from choosing the same gratitude again and again, every day, always. It’s empowering.
Familiar gratitude makes you feel right at home. It’s comfortable and sublime. Not mundane. Call it dynamic-tranquility.
That is what makes it real.
