Enrollment or Being Told What to Do
by Michael Feeley
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE between enrollment and being told what to do?
What’s the difference between ‘have to’ and ‘want to?’
School was mandatory – a ‘have to system.’ You had to show up and take all the courses you were told to take so you could graduate with a diploma. You didn’t have a choice unless you didn’t go to school.
That’s different from volunteering, the choice to enroll in a class, learn new skills, and create something because you ‘want to.’
Enrollment is about you – unique, individual you. It’s not one-size-fits-all or follow-the-leader herd work.
Enrollment is about teamwork and building a culture with others on the same path—people who see what you see.
May want what you want and dream about. It’s bigger than a department or one specific leader.
Enrollment is for people who want more. Achievers. Contributors, Explorers, Inventors.
Enrollment is emotional. It’s not a signed contract or job description.
Each of us is on a life path. It’s a meaningful adventure, and hopefully, you’re enrolled because you see value in the journey. You’re committed because something special matters to you.
Enrollment means you’re on board. You give yourself permission to engage, join, and be part of learning and growing, maybe with a teacher, other students, colleagues, boss, or customers.
If you’re in sales, you can care about people and not hustle them. You sell because you sincerely believe your services and products will benefit people’s lives.
Your sales enrollment is work you’re proud of. You do things your way, not sticking to a script like a recording. It’s not generic talk. It’s genuine, innovative conversation from your heart and experience.
People hire me as a coach because they want some kind of change in their lives and work and know they can’t do it alone. They enroll in change. That’s different from being told you must coach once a week because you have to change this and this about yourself and how you work.
When you’re ordered to do and not willingly enrolled, it probably will not work.
Enrollment is we together – human to human – self with another self.
Anthony Iannarino is a sales leader I respect. He helps develop high-performing teams, and at the center of his mighty work is his care for people, his ability, and his need to build relationships.
Here are his words:
“More clients are lost to neglect than any other cause. All things being equal, relationships win. Your intentions matter, and they are felt by your clients, your prospect, and all of the people whom you interact. When you come from a place of caring, you generate trust and build powerful relationships.”
And
“…many leaders use their organization authority instead of inviting people to an adventure, one with meaning, and one that will require growth. Leaders mistakenly believe everyone is motivated by money.”
Enrollment and Empathy are the new choices for leaders and success.
