Earth Below, Sky Above
by Michael Feeley
There are many ways I feel connected to the world, but nature remains the most immediate. It asks nothing of me except to notice. The ground beneath my feet. The sky over my head. Between them, I stand.
I feel the earth and my feet joined. Grass in the morning, garden soil turned by hand, stones warmed by sun, sand giving way underneath me, ocean water cold around my ankles. Each surface speaks a different language, but the message is the same: you are held.
And overhead. Blue sky, clouds moving in no hurry, the sun doing what it has always done. At night, stars scattered wide, the moon keeping watch. I don’t have to understand any of it to feel it. I only have to look up.
This connection is given freely the moment I step outside and pay attention. There’s immediate gratitude in it. The miracle of self-meeting world, world meeting self, without any translation needed.
So I’ll ask you what I ask myself most mornings:
How do you feel connected to the earth? Is it the ground under your feet? The sky you glance at? A garden, a shoreline, a window, a book, a song, a pet, a person you love?
Notice it today. Value it. Feel the gratitude. It’s already speaking to you.
