Community Lessons from Orchids
by Michael Feeley
Three orchid plants share one pot on my deck, forty-plus blossoms and buds creating an explosion of beauty. They’re mature plants, different varieties, blooming together in healthy abundance. They’ll bloom again in a few months. They always return. If cared for.
When you see them, something good immediately happens. Gratitude. Respect. Awe. Happiness. You don’t find them annoying or in the way. You’re simply amazed and glad they exist.
Here’s what matters most: you are changed by them, added to, not made less. Their beauty doesn’t diminish you – it expands you. Has a good effect on you and others who see it.
We recognize this power everywhere. A flock of birds moving as one. A beehive’s purposeful hum. A garden where each plant contributes to the whole. A neighborhood where people look out for each other.
Margaret Mead said it so well:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
This is community at its best.
Each orchid blossom has its own power, its own presence. Yet they share roots, drawing from the same source. The diversity makes the display richer – different colors, different blooming times, different shapes, all thriving in the same pot.
Every bud represents a new possibility. These mature plants aren’t finished – they’re in full bloom, offering beauty that lasts for months.
Where we live and how we live either build a healthy root system or they don’t. The conditions matter. Care matters. Connection to the source matters.
We’re not so different from orchids. Our purpose is to grow, to flourish, to have goodwill for others. To be part of a community where each person’s individual power contributes to collective beauty and welfare. Where we’re not seen as in the way, but as essential to what makes the whole garden magnificent.
We create gratitude simply by being fully ourselves.
