Community
by Michael Feeley
THERE’S THE COMMUNITY of 1 – you with your ‘self.’
There’s the community of 1 to another – a partner, family member, friend.
There’s the community of 1 to many others – people you work with, neighbors, families, your village, state, country.
There’s the community of 1 with the entire world – self and world – living on the same earth, sharing cultures, attitudes, and interests.
Community brings people together. It enriches their lives.
People share and find purpose and support in a community. Belonging that means security, a place where you matter,
where you are not alone.
There are many benefits to being in community.
Respect for others, and their beliefs, values, ways of seeing the world, creativity, care, trust, willingness to help others, collaboration, expectations, support, communication, doing things together, growing together.
Changes are happening in social media communities where people want more than large numbers of followers they may not know. People are creating smaller communities for greater meaning, making positive change, honoring people’s needs, solving problems, and getting results they desire.
Look around at natural communities and see how they work and what you can learn from them.
Hives for bees – flocks of white egrets and penguins – forests – schools of fish – books on the shelves of a library – fruits and vegetables at farmers markets – magazines on a rack – YouTube videos – an orchestra and musical notes on a page – boats in a harbor – ocean waves – clouds in the sky – cars in parking lots – group coaching and workshops – products – services – all kinds of tribes.
It takes a special person who chooses to build and be part of a community. It happens daily. Sometimes, we know how it happens; other times, we do not.
Pick yourself – Pick your community – Pick your people.
Here are words I love by a hero of mine, Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. (Bernard Shaw at his insistence.)
They perfectly express what I feel about being part of the Purple Space community.
“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.
I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. Life is no ‘brief candle’ to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to the future generations.”
