Collective Effervescence
by Michael Feeley
Collective effervescence is an idea I have loved since I first heard the two words together. French sociologist Emile Durkheim first promoted it.
It’s a collective energy that people create and simultaneously share, such as at a sports event when a goal is made or at a concert where the artist first appears or returns to give an encore.
It’s similar mass feelings and thoughts of unbounded vivacity, enthusiasm, and unified joy, and it can even feel sacred.
When have you experienced collective effervescence?
How did it make you feel?
Where might you create it?
