Coincidence

Coincidence

by Michael Feeley September 1, 2026

I’m thinking about coincidence because I experience it a lot.

Two separate things, two separate events, arriving at the same moment. I don’t believe it’s a fluke or mere chance. I believe there’s meaning in it, and that meaning is something we can discover, if we’re paying attention.

There’s something almost impossible to explain about the moment it happens. You think of an old friend, and the phone rings. You hum a song in your head, and it comes on the radio minutes later. For a second, the world feels like it’s arranging itself just for you, and you can’t quite say why.

The person most people point to is Carl Jung, who coined the term “synchronicity” in the 1950s. His word for “meaningful coincidence.” Jung argued that two events could be linked not by cause and effect, but by the significance they carry for the person living through them. The universe, in his view, produced moments where the inner and outer worlds lined up, carrying meaning for whoever noticed.

Statisticians cite the “law of truly large numbers”: with enough moments in a life, some unlikely overlaps are mathematically guaranteed.

Psychologists add the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon: once something enters your awareness (a song, a word, a face), your brain suddenly notices it everywhere, because it was always there; you just weren’t looking.

Confirmation bias plays its part too: we remember the coincidences that startled us and forget the thousand ordinary moments when nothing lined up at all.

So yes, there’s a science to it. It explains the mechanism, not the meaning. That gap is where my belief lives. I don’t think meeting a friend across an ocean, or hearing a song the moment I think of it, is only my brain doing pattern-work. I think it’s the world tapping me on the shoulder, asking me to pay attention.

So the next time something lines up in a way that stops you for a second, please pay attention. Why is for you to discover.
