Be a Catalyst for Change
by Michael Feeley
YOU CAN BE a catalyst for change.
It’s a choice you make to stand for the truth, and that also means your truth. The facts and feelings about who you are and how you live, hopefully, with the active desire to make life better any way you can.
I’ve been thinking about Shirley Chisholm and what she stood for, and how she gives me courage. American politician, educator, and author, who in 1968 became the first black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing
New York’s 12th congressional district.
So many of her words stand out for me because of the positive, emotional feelings they create in me.
– “We must reject not only the stereotypes that others have of us but also those that we have of ourselves.”
– “The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says: It’s a girl.”
– “You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by
implementing ideas.”
– “I want history to remember me… not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of the United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America.”
How do her words change you?
