Why Do You Do What You Want To Do?
by Michael Feeley
IT’S COLD, GREY, WINDY, and rainy, yet one bird is splashing around in my birdbath, having a joyful ball of a bath.
We share the planet with other beings, which means we can learn from them.
What does this happy bird tell you about your choices to have pleasure?
You’re allowed to gratify yourself, but why not dive deep and discover why?
> Why do I do what I want to do?
I’m sure the bird doesn’t think this way. He just wanted to get wet and feel refreshed (even in crappy weather), so he did it. He’s wildly grateful.
Why not be exact and careful to understand your choices and actions, like the precision of a surgical laser beam?
As humans with reason and heart, it’s crucial for everyone – children, door attendants, house painters, CEOs – to have answers for why we do what we do, our decisions, and our deeds and the outcome.
Keep asking the right questions – empowering questions.
> What do I want?
> Why do I want this?
> What kind of pleasure am I seeking?
> How will I respect myself?
> How will my actions affect me and others if I do what I want?
> Will my actions make me stronger or weaker?
> Doing what I want to do, will I be true or false to myself?
Understanding why you do what you want to do and the consequences doesn’t extinguish the pleasure and gratitude –
it only increases it.
