Where Do You Feel at Home?
by Michael Feeley
The dictionary says home is where we live: a house, an apartment, an address. It speaks of safety, family, and belonging. All true. But I’ve been wondering if home is something larger, something we carry with us more than something we return to.
So I’m asking you: Where do you feel at home?
Not where you sleep or where your mail arrives. Where do you feel most like yourself?
For some people it’s their work. Give them a desk, a laptop, a problem to solve, and they settle in like a cat in a sunny window. For others it’s paint and a blank canvas. A kitchen full of good smells. A pen, a notebook, and a comfortable chair.
For me, home is my desk in the morning, when the words start to come. It’s my hands in the soil, tending what grows. And yes, I need a house, a place where I’m safe and comfortable. But the walls aren’t what make it home. The person I love does. A relationship is a home too. Maybe the most important one.
This idea came to me in meditation early this morning. That’s another place I feel at home: in the stillness and inner activity where the truest thoughts seem to find me.
Here’s what I believe: home is wherever you stop doing and performing. It’s the place, the activity, or the person that lets you set down the effort of being someone else. You don’t have to explain yourself there. You simply are your true self.
That’s worth knowing. Because when life shifts, as it always does, you can find your way back.
Please tell me:
What makes you feel at home?
What makes you feel most yourself?
That’s where you live. That’s home.
