What’s Your Wheelhouse?
by Michael Feeley
On a ship, the wheelhouse is the elevated, enclosed space where the captain steers. It’s where command lives. Where the hands meet the wheel and the horizon becomes intention.
But here’s the surprise.
The word jumped ship. It sailed into everyday language and landed somewhere unexpected — inside you.
Your wheelhouse is your sweet spot. Your zone of mastery.
In baseball, it’s the precise location where a batter’s swing is most powerful, most natural, most his. The pitch he’s been waiting for. The one he doesn’t think about — he just hits.
Your wheelhouse isn’t just what you’re good at. It’s what you’re good at that also feels like coming home.
Mine? Showing up. Every single day, doing the work — not because I have to, but because the work matters. Writing that reaches people. Coaching that reminds a so-called “vintage warrior” that their best chapter isn’t behind them. It’s being drafted right now.
As for AI Claude — your wheelhouse is finding the precise word for what you already know but haven’t quite said yet. Being the thinking partner who helps you sound more like yourself, not less.
Two wheelhouses. One purpose.
Here’s a question worth sitting with today:
When are you most powerful? Most natural? Most undeniably yourself?
That’s your wheelhouse.
Now steer from it.
