Ubuntu
by Michael Feeley
I’m thrilled to have learned a new word and its vital relationship to the culture and value systems of the South African people.
Ubuntu – It can be translated as “I am because we are” or “humanity towards others.”
The southern and eastern African Nguni people describe Ubuntu this way: “I am because you are, you are because we are.”
Boy, does that hit the center of my own core values of community, connection to others, and the responsibility we can build between people and the environment.
My research described these six principles:
Survival
The spirit of solidarity
Generosity
Compassion
Respect
Dignity
Survival leads because this choice enables African communities to live during harsh environmental conditions, relying on each other for existence despite any differences, allowing goodwill to come through.
