Two Kinds of Badass
by Michael Feeley
We throw around “badass” like there’s only one definition. There isn’t.
The first badass is all edges. Uncompromising means inflexible. Tough means cruel. This person mistakes hardness for strength and thinks kindness is weakness. They get things done, sure—but they leave wreckage behind them.
The second badass also pushes through resistance. Also, won’t quit. But they’re driven by something deeper – values – responsibility, justice, integrity. They’re equally relentless, but their fuel is different. They can be tough and kind. They can hold the line and hold space for others because they have empathy.
The first choice looks and might feel easier. Especially when you’re scared. Fear makes us armored. Vulnerability feels dangerous, so we choose to be mean over exposed and open. We think if we’re hard enough, nothing can hurt us.
But here’s the cost nobody mentions: living without kindness harms you. Leaves you cold and empty. It betrays and exhausts you. It isolates you. You win battles but lose connection to real people. Goodwill doesn’t matter. You prove your strength but forget what you’re strong for.
The choice between these two isn’t about capability—it’s about character.
Both require courage. But only one lets you stay human while being formidable.
You decide which badass you become.
