Triggers of Gratitude
by Michael Feeley
What triggers your gratitude?
A smell. A sound. A face. A moment that returns.
Mine? The cool air of early morning in Chinon, France. Birds I don’t know by name. The Loire river moving quietly somewhere beyond the garden wall. Coffee in hand. A pen. A blank page.
And the garden itself — 60 plus years of gardens, and still the same wonder when something grows and blooms, especially the scent of fresh lavender flowers.
Then there’s a joke that makes you laugh so hard you have to stop walking.
A book with a handwritten note inside.
A letter from someone who says you changed something for me.
The photo of friends together.
These are the triggers of gratitude.
They don’t announce themselves. They merely arrive, and suddenly you’re flooded — with joy, with thanks, with love, kindness and the fierce awareness that this, right here, is the life that matters to you in the most particular, emotional ways.
What triggers your gratitude and love?
Don’t answer quickly… Let the answer find you.
