There’s a Second Opportunity
by Michael Feeley
A window of opportunity is exactly what it sounds like. Not a door standing open indefinitely, not a permanent fixture. A window that opens for a while, and then closes.
Time is limited. Conditions align. And for a stretch, something is possible that won’t always be possible. The job opening at the company you’ve admired for years. The sale price that vanishes tomorrow. The two seats that just freed up in the class you wanted. The product you could launch before your competitors get there first. Food spoils. Batteries die. Stock prices move. None of it waits for you to be ready. It waits for you to notice, and then it moves on without you if you do not act on the opportunity.
Most of us understand this kind of window. We watch for it. We rush toward it when we see it crack open.
But there’s a second kind of window, and it’s the one we forget about: the one you open yourself.
Maybe there’s a company or a person you want to work with, and there’s no listing, no opening, no invitation. So you create one. You look at what they’re missing and you offer it. You send the proposal nobody asked for. You send the resume before there’s a job. You connect with the people who do the hiring, not because a door was left open, but because you decided to knock.
Sell the rental home. Bank the money. Take the time and the capital and go figure out what’s next. Visit the city you’ve wondered about — not as a tourist, but as an audition for a life change. See if it fits. If it does, make it happen.
Possibility isn’t only something that finds you. Sometimes it’s something you build a frame around, then step through.
You don’t always have to wait to be seen. You can pick yourself. Go ahead, walk to center stage, stand in the spotlight, and let people find out who you are and what you can do for them.
Some windows open on their own. Others need your hand on the latch.
Create your opportunities.
