The Top Skill Isn’t Technical

The Top Skill Isn’t Technical

by Michael Feeley September 19, 2026

I’ve been writing about skills all week — Upskilling, Deskilling, Skill Erosion, Cognitive Offloading — and asking you directly: What are your skills?

If I had to pick one word for myself, and it is a skill and one you can practice, it would be caring. I care about people. I care about my work. It’s central to who I am, just like integrity. You can’t really separate the two.  You can’t care about someone and then treat them carelessly. You’ve got to have heart. And that is not a soft skill. It’s a human skill.

Caring about another person. Listening to them. Wanting to know who they are, not just what they need from you, but who they are to themselves. Their hopes. Their fears. What’s holding them back from their dreams and how they can get there.

Caring is a choice: the ability to get inside someone else’s head and see the world the way they see it. It takes discipline, courage, attention, and a real willingness to set yourself aside. It’s harder than most technical skills, because technical skills ask something of your hands or your training. This one asks something of your whole self.

I see it every day in my work. In real estate, it’s tempting to think the job is the sale — square footage, price, closing date. But it’s never really about that. It’s about finding someone a home. You can’t do that well unless you understand what “home” means to them. Empathy and deep listening must be present.

Teaching is the same. You’re not just delivering information. You want someone to learn, yes, but underneath that, you want them to become all they can be.

Coaching too. My work as a coach isn’t handing someone a plan. It’s helping them see what’s in their own way — inside themselves — so they can break through it and get to where they actually want to go. To help them know the answer is in them, and you will help them find it.

That takes commitment and heart. It takes caring, with integrity, about another person. Genuinely.

AI can produce a lot. It can write, calculate, organize, even mimic warmth on the page. But it cannot actually want to know who you are. It cannot sit with your fear and your hope and hold both with you. That is still — and I believe will always be — ours alone to give.

So as you take stock of your skills this week, don’t leave this one off the list. It isn’t soft. It’s the skill that makes every other skill worth having.

Who are you caring for through your work?
