The Physics of Ageing

The Physics of Ageing

by Michael Feeley March 17, 2026

Here’s something scientific and positive you can learn about ageing.

In physics, when something slows down, it doesn’t automatically lose power. Sometimes it gains it. A river moving through a narrow canyon moves slowly — and with tremendous force. A compressed spring holds more energy than a loose one. Mass and momentum are not the same thing as speed.

This is not a metaphor. This is science. And it applies directly to you.

Yes, some mornings are harder. Yes, your body has opinions it didn’t use to share. That is real. And so is this.

Researchers at MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital studied nearly three million people. They found that crystallized intelligence — the accumulated pattern recognition, deep judgment, and hard-won wisdom built over decades — peaks in your late 60s and early 70s. Not despite your age. Because of it.

Fluid intelligence, the quick-fire processing kind, does decline. But that is only half the story. And it is half the world the world keeps telling you, while ignoring the other half.

There is more. The ability to read people — to understand emotional situations, navigate relationships, and know what someone needs before they say it — also peaks later in life, often in your 40s and 50s, and remains a powerful advantage well beyond.

For anyone who has spent decades leading, coaching, parenting, or building anything that involves other human beings, this is your superpower. And it is science.

Your brain has also been quietly doing something remarkable for years. Every time you practiced your craft, navigated a difficult situation, or solved a problem others couldn’t, your brain built and reinforced myelin along those specific neural pathways — the insulation that makes signal transmission faster and more precise. Decades of practiced expertise leave their mark in the most literal biological sense.

Now consider momentum.

In physics, momentum equals mass times velocity. Most people focus on velocity — how fast. But mass matters equally. And what is the mass of a life fully lived? It is your network, your reputation, your judgment, your ability to read a room before anyone else has finished their first sentence. As velocity naturally decreases, mass — if you keep building it — sustains and can even increase your momentum.

There is also a phenomenon in biology called hormesis — the well-researched principle that a living system exposed to manageable stress over time grows stronger, not weaker. Stress that doesn’t break you builds you. Which means: keep practicing, keep showing up, keep challenging yourself. Not as motivation. As biology.

You may move more deliberately. You may speak less and mean more. But your force is not diminishing. It is compressing into something extraordinary.

You are not losing ground. You are gaining density.

Slower is not lesser. Older is not over.

Physics says so.

We are getting better as we sage.
