The Man Who Isn’t Finished at 100

The Man Who Isn’t Finished at 100

by Michael Feeley October 19, 2026

Sir David Attenborough turned 100 this year. He is a centenarian, a member of a very small club.

And how did he mark his century? He went back to work.

The BBC announced that he will narrate Blue Planet III. He narrated the first Blue Planet twenty-five years ago. He admitted he never imagined he’d be “narrating a third series in my centennial year.”

And he is. Because this is what he loves.

Years ago, someone asked him how long he planned to keep working. He answered: “As long as I’m vertical… and as long as people ask me to do it.”

At 100, his plan hasn’t changed: “I’ll keep going until this old body suggests it’s time to give up.”

Think about what that mind, heart and voice has given us. Blue Planet II helped spark a worldwide movement against single-use plastics. One man’s curiosity, wisdom, and caring changed how millions of us treat the oceans. And he’s still giving.

This is Sagerism.

A Sager doesn’t fade into the sunset. A Sager keeps showing up and uses everything they have learned to give back. Sir David isn’t living on past glory. He is adding to it.

Is purpose why he’s still here at 100? I believe it is. His attitude to the world. The way he respects the earth and people. No one can prove that for a single life. But the science is clear about the pattern. A University of Michigan study of nearly 7,000 adults over 50 found that people with the strongest sense of purpose were far less likely to die during the study than those with the weakest. That held true even after accounting for exercise, drinking, and weight. Purpose isn’t a guarantee. It is one of the best bets we have.

You don’t have to be a world-famous naturalist to live this way. You have your own Blue Planet: the people you mentor, the cskills you’ve mastered, the stories only you can tell, the contributions you have made.

Now ask yourself:

What do I love with a whole heart?

Who can I give it to?

What is my next act?

Sir David, thank you. At 100, you remind us that age is not an ending. It is an invitation to keep deepening. To use your entire self for other people’s and the world’s welfare.

Clearly, you’re not finished yet.
