The Gratitude Roll Call
by Michael Feeley
GRATITUDE IS CRUCIAL in all my coaching work, from executives to recent college grads.
It’s the choice to say Thank You – to accurately appreciate someone or something – to like – to love – to acknowledge –
to celebrate good things that make life worthwhile, strong, happy, and successful.
I am grateful for… That is your focus.
Here’s one tool I use in coaching. I call it – The Gratitude Roll Call.
Find a comfortable spot to sit for a few moments, close your eyes (if you wish), and begin to focus on one thing you are grateful for. Take your time. See and feel your gratitude for this object or person. (It might be… I’m grateful for a fresh glass of water… I’m grateful for the piano music of Rachmaninoff… I’m grateful for the poems of Mary Oliver… I’m grateful for my husband’s compassion.) Whatever it is, honor it with your whole self.
Keep The Gratitude Roll Call going.
Take time and give things meaning.
Don’t be fast. Make thoughtful and caring choices. Speak out your gratitude if you like.
Breathe your gratitude in and out. Let your breath be natural.
Breathe your gratitude through all of your senses and your open heart.
Now, feel the effects of your gratitude on your mind, body, and spirit.
Perhaps there is calm and energy – what I like to call dynamic tranquility.
Perhaps creativity is alive and stirring.
Perhaps you have new answers to questions.
Whatever the effects, they are unique to you. They are significant and vital – connecting you to the forces of the universe and your highest self.
Create a Daily Gratitude Roll Call.
Make Gratitude a Daily Practice.
You can have a Gratitude Roll Call at any time or place. It’s an empowering scientific gift to center and enhance your Self. To have you live as your best self.
Gratitude is the flip side of negativity, hopelessness, distress, fear, and worry. It challenges and alters these harmful emotions.
‘I am grateful for…’ what inspiring and moving words these are.
