The Best is Right Now
by Michael Feeley
“The best is yet to come.” We say it because we hope it. We can’t know it. The future hasn’t happened. We set things in motion: work, creativity, dreams, and then we wait to see if they land.
That phrase carries real comfort. It says: don’t judge yourself by today’s uncertainty or trouble. You haven’t peaked. You haven’t finished. Hold on.
But I’ve stopped waiting for the best. I’ve stopped placing it out there, somewhere ahead, always just out of reach. In the unknown.
Right now is the best.
Not because everything is solved. Not because I’ve arrived. Because this moment — this one, right here — is the only one I’m actually alive in.
The past is over. Done. Finished business, however good it looked. And the future isn’t real yet. It’s a guess, a hope, a plan. Now is the only place life actually happens.
I’m 74. Vintage. And vintage doesn’t mean waiting for some future peak—it means getting better with age, right where I stand. Deepening, not declining. That includes this: living in the moment, fully, instead of postponing the best to some day that hasn’t come.
So today, I’m not hoping the best is yet to come.
I’m living it.
