Tell Me What To Do
by Michael Feeley
At work, it should never be about “Just tell me what to do.”
Be proactive. Be creative. Make choices. Take responsibility.
Yes, you have a job description — tasks, goals, deadlines. You can follow what you’re told and do exactly that. Or you can do more. Because you can. Because it is your nature. Because you love the work and want to do it well — the best you possibly can.
That always means doing more. Trusting yourself. Trusting your skills.
Look around. Assess. You can do just enough to meet your requirements. Be average. Adequate. Forgettable. Or you can bring everything you have — and feel the difference in your body, your pride, your sense of self.
Fit in or stand out.
What boss ever walked up to someone and said, “You do too much. Cut back. Do less. Be more like everyone else.”
None. Not one. Ever. Because that person doesn’t exist. And neither does that boss.
The people who go above and beyond don’t get told to stop. They get noticed. They get trusted. They get remembered. They become the ones others turn to when it matters most.
There is a difference between filling a role and owning it.
One is a job. The other is a professional calling.
See the choice. Then make it.
