Take in the World

by Michael Feeley
Take in a breath of air, hold it for a few seconds, and then release it.
The air connects you to the world. It comes from all around the world. You need it. Air keeps you alive.
Now, please think about people in other places in the world, such as Florence, Italy, Montreal, Canada, Nigeria, Africa, Paris, France, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They are also breathing air – probably the same as you, in some way.
Your thoughts about others connect you with them, whether you know them or not. You can decide to go deeper and imagine a man, a woman, or a child. Please give them a name, describe their appearance, and fill in all the rich and complex details of who they are. Make them as real and alive as you are with feelings, hopes, dreams, fears, concerns, and thousands of known and unknown thoughts. (Authors do this in books, movies, and plays.)
What else connects you to the world, products, services, and things you count on to live and share with others?
Acknowledge it or not, there is value in how we take in the world in various simple and extraordinary ways.
Imagination, awareness, and need make for connection, gratitude, wonder, curiosity, and opportunities to understand and care for other people and our world.
