Surprise

Surprise

by Michael Feeley August 4, 2026

We treat surprise as rare, a special occasion. But surprise is everywhere, waiting for us to notice it and even rediscover it.

Turn on the tap. Water arrives in both cold and hot forms. Summoned from somewhere unseen, traveling through pipes and pumps and decisions made by people we’ll never meet, just so we can drink, cook, and wash. We call this ordinary. It is actually a miracle we may have merely stopped seeing.

The body surprises us too. A test result. A new ache, or its sudden absence. Health has its own weather, and we are rarely warned before it changes.

Not every surprise is welcome. Some arrive as loss, as bad news, as a door we didn’t choose closing. These surprises are real, and they deserve to be felt, not talked away or ignored. But even the hard ones prove that we are still awake enough to be caught off guard by life, and surprise can guide us in the right direction.

Then there is the surprise we deliberately create—the party someone else planned for us. The one we plan for someone else, candles lit, door opened, a room full of people who kept a happy secret out of love. This is a surprise gift we choose to give, not something that merely happens to us.

And sometimes surprise arrives as work. A project we never asked for lands in our hands, and we discover (even to our own surprise) that we were ready for it all along.

Most surprise is not an interruption of ordinary life. It is ordinary life, if we’re paying attention.

Today, notice one surprise, small or large, easy or hard, and let yourself feel it fully.
