Sudden Connecting Change
by Michael Feeley
ONE OF MY HEROES is Helen Keller.
I remember watching the movie The Miracle Worker with Ann Bancroft and Patty Duke, mesmerized by the story and the two actors. I was 11 years old, and the next day I went right to the library and took out her autobiography – The Story of My Life.
What captivated me most was how Helen’s teacher, Annie Sullivan, fought for the best thing in Helen. Never quitting teaching Helen (blind and deaf) how to connect to the outside world as she consistently and persistently spelled words into Helen’s hand. What a life-changing moment when Helen awakes and knows what ‘water’ is.
“Once I knew only darkness and stillness… my life was without past or future… but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living.” – Helen Keller
49 years they remained friends. What goodwill can do!
Where have you experienced that kind of sudden life-changing moment where the light turns on, and you finally understood something you’ve struggled with, and you come alive?
We are all looking for change. Looking to learn and be our true, entire, best selves… what the universe means for us to be.
Thanks – Michael (he, him)
