Smudging

Smudging

by Michael Feeley June 28, 2026

I am selling a cottage and several people suggested I smudge it before the next owner moves in.

I looked it up, and what I found was beautiful.

Smudging is an ancient practice — sacred, deliberate, and purposeful.

Indigenous peoples across North America have honored it for centuries. Other cultures in Asia, Europe, and Africa carry their own versions of it. The ritual is universal because the need is universal.

We have always known that spaces hold energy. And the energy can sour, and that can change with the art of smudging.

You burn four sacred plants: sage, sweet grass, cedar, tobacco. Gifts from Mother Earth, each one carries its own power and purpose.

Sage purifies and drives out negative energy.
Sweet grass attracts positive energy and beauty.
Cedar wards off sickness.
Tobacco carries prayers and thoughts on its smoke, connecting us to the spiritual world.

The herbs are bundled into a smudge stick, lit, and the flame gently blown out. The smoke moves through a space, clearing it. It is believed to attach to negative energy and carry it away as it rises. A feather — eagle feathers are treasured — fans the smoke through every corner. Windows and doors are open so the smoke and what it carries can escape easily.

The ritual is simple. The intention behind it is profound.

You are saying: this space deserves to begin again.

And that made me ask a harder question.

What about us?

How do we smudge ourselves?

We carry things. Contempt for people who wronged us. Resentments we have polished so long they shine. Regrets that live rent-free in our minds and charge interest. Harmful thoughts we may think about daily.

These are not neutral. They take up space. They foul the air inside us.

The elders understood something we keep forgetting. Purification first. Then prayer. Clear the old before you invite in the new. You cannot fill a space that is already occupied.

Name what you are carrying. Decide whether it serves you. If it does not — let it burn away.

What replaces it matters just as much. Respect. Kindness without condition. Thoughts you would be willing to speak in the light.

Ancient people knew this. A space — and a soul — can always begin again.

The smoke knows where to go.

You do too.
