Selfishness, Greed, Apathy and Climate Change
by Michael Feeley
EACH DAY I read about climate change in the new book – The Carbon Almanac.
I learn a lot, apply it to my life, and share it with others.
Today I read these powerful and surprising words by James Gustave Speth, (Gus Speth), American environmental lawyer and advocate who co-founded The Natural Resources Defense Council.
“I used to think the top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change.
I thought with 30 years of good science we could address those problems, but I was wrong.
The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy – and to deal with these we need a spiritual and cultural transformation, and we scientists don’t know how to do that.”
I love these words. What brave awareness and criticism and an opportunity to change and grow for yourself and the world’s benefit.
The words went to the center of me because they described my attitude toward climate change until I began to seek the truth and learn the facts.
I see these words as accurate and kind – “… selfishness, greed, and apathy… we need a spiritual and cultural transformation…”
