Saving Face
by Michael Feeley
SAVING FACE ARE important words. They’re passionate and emergent decisions we each make about integrity and truth – doing all we can to maintain respect and honor.
It comes from a Chinese expression that suggests keeping a calm face and not revealing your emotions to avoid disgrace.
Your face is a profound symbol of dignity, justice, and self-esteem.
It’s both personal and universal and brings together surface and depth – the outer surface of your face and the inner depths of feelings and critical choices.
We want people to trust us – not to lose face.
We can also help another person save face by having empathy and kindness – standing in their shoes to understand what they feel and to encourage their well-being and self-pride.
You can be a leader for Saving Face.
