Sacrifices and Benefits

by Michael Feeley
Whenever we make a choice, we are working with sacrifices and benefits.
We choose cereal for breakfast over an omelet. What did we sacrifice, and where did we benefit?
We stay at home for our vacation rather than traveling and going away. We decide to surround ourselves with positive, creative people who support and respect us and to keep away from emotional, needy vampires who suck the life out of us. We say yes to public transportation and ride-sharing to help protect the environment. Where are the sacrifices and benefits in our decisions?
Sacrifice has positive and negative aspects, and we should be clear about our purpose in making specific choices. We should avoid feeling we sacrificed and suffered, but rather feel secure with the benefits of what we have given up – something for something.
You always have options that can make you proud of your decisions and actions, even when they are immensely challenging and create pain, disappointment, or unhappiness.
Yes. It takes work and sacrifice to achieve what you want; the vital choice is knowing what you want and why you are doing it.
Maybe you decide to stay at home to raise your family and put off your career dreams and goals. Make sure your choice inspires gratitude and pride so you are not filled with resentment and regret later on. What are you getting in place of what you will be sacrificing?
Hopefully, our choices make things better and have us feel we are being true to our whole selves and that we and others benefit in positive, healthy, inspiring, and empowering ways.
