Respect for People and Things

by Michael Feeley
What does it mean to show respect to others and for things?
Respect has care in it. Admiration. Thoughtfulness. Consideration. Politeness. Regard for someone’s feelings, rights, wishes, and views, even when you disagree with them, no matter how different they may seem.
Respect is treating others the way you want to be treated.
Respect begins with yourself.
What do you, other people, and things deserve?
What will encourage someone and something to be at their best?
Prune, water, and fertilize a plant.
Polish a silver tray or piece of jewelry to remove the tarnish and return it to its original brilliance.
Wash windows and eyeglasses, and honor the clearness of glass and how you look out at the world.
Keep your tools free of rust and dirt.
Tune the piano.
Organize desks, drawers, cupboards, and closets.
Put fresh batteries in the flashlight and clock so they work well.
Steadily write your Dailies, your blog and book.
Hang up and fold clothes.
Dust and vacuum.
Don’t waste electricity, water or food.
Pay your bills on time.
Answer emails.
Recycle.
Learn more.
Look, think and sincerely ask – Who is this person to themselves? What do they feel and hope for? Where might I be useful and have a good effect on them?
See what I’m saying about respect – caring – giving people and things their due – being fair – and just.
