Recycle Yourself

Recycle Yourself

by Michael Feeley July 11, 2026

Nothing you’ve lived is wasted. That’s the secret and valuable opportunity no one tells you.

I spent years on stage. Voice training, script analysis, the discipline and skill of standing in another person’s skin, eight shows a week. Then I became a headhunter. On paper, a different life. In practice, the same life, recycled.

The empathy I built playing characters became the empathy I used with people, candidates. The listening I learned in rehearsal became the listening I used in interviews with people (clients and candidates). I didn’t leave the actor behind. I converted him into something new.

Now I coach people through career and life transitions. And I see it again. Every skill I ever built — on stage, in boardrooms, in my own reinventions — shows up in that work. The questions I learned to ask a character, I ask people. The patience I learned waiting for a scene to reveal itself, I use waiting for a client to find their own answer. Nothing was ever really left behind. It was only ever being stored, waiting for its next assignment.

That’s the real question. Not “what did I waste my time on,” but “what can this become now?”

Look at what you’ve set aside. The language you stopped speaking. The instrument you stopped playing. The math you thought you’d never use again. None of it is garbage. It’s raw material.

Ask yourself:

What skill did I build once, for one purpose, that could serve a different purpose now?

What did I learn in a season of my life that I dismissed as over, finished, irrelevant — that is actually still alive, waiting to be picked back up and reshaped?

Recycle yourself. Don’t discard. Don’t store away. Use it all, again, differently.

Nothing is wasted. It’s only waiting for its next use.
