Mystery is everywhere, and most of the time we don’t even notice it.

We spend our lives trying to explain things. Why she left. Why he stayed. Why the ending happened the way it did. We want the answer, the reason, the neat unlocking of the thing. And yet — some of the best moments of being alive happen inside the not-knowing.

There’s real science behind this pull. Researchers who study curiosity have found that it isn’t simply an interest; it’s a gap.

The moment we sense there’s something we don’t yet know, something out of reach, the mind leans toward it. Know nothing, and curiosity never starts. Know just enough to feel the gap, and the pull becomes almost impossible to resist.

That’s the logic and purpose behind every good opening chapter, and every person who reveals just enough of themselves to make you want to know more.

Uncertainty is uncomfortable, something to avoid. Mostly, that’s true. But researchers have also found that uncertainty has a genuinely rewarding side. Not knowing exactly how something will turn out — a story, a choice, a person — can itself be a source of pleasure. The anticipation is part of the enjoyment, not just an obstacle or discomfort.

Think of a good book. A good movie. The pull isn’t the resolution; it’s the reaching. The guessing. The theories you build and rebuild as new pieces arrive.

People are the same. The people you love most are still, after years, partly unknown to you. You catch a glimpse, a gesture, a silence, a choice you didn’t expect, and you’re reminded: there is more here than I will ever fully see. That’s not a failure of closeness. That’s the depth of it—the mystery of humanity.

Mystery isn’t a problem to be solved. It’s a place we get to keep walking into.

Some things stay unsettled, unfinished, unexplainable, and somehow, that’s exactly what makes them feel real.
