Music Connects Us

by Michael Feeley
Music is woven into our deepest memories and emotions. Specific pieces are emotional keys, unlocking not just feelings but entire relationships and experiences.
Music helps us feel less alone; it preserves and transmits human emotion across cultures and generations, providing a common language for feelings we struggle to express in words.
Music is personal and universal, connecting us to each other’s humanity.
When you hear a particular piece of music, what does it do to you?
Let me show you what I mean:
– I hear “Gabriel’s Oboe” by Ennio Morricone from the movie The Mission, and I think of my beloved dog Tulla, who passed away several years ago. It evokes tearful, profound gratitude and yearning for her fierce joy and friendship, drawing me close to her once again.
– I hear and watch Marilyn Horne (YouTube) sing “Oh, come da quel di’ from the opera Semiramide by Rossini and for 3.5 minutes, I’m in awe! Thrilled by her artistry, her technique, and sound, the vocal precision that makes for great freedom, powerful high notes, and deep, robust low notes. All sung with confidence and open generosity. Vocal pyrotechnics is what it is.
– I hear Barbara Streisand sing “The Nearness of You” on her Simply Streisand record album, and I melt because it reminds me of love… lovers. I first heard it as a freshman in high school at the home of a dear friend, Janet. It’s also my favorite song in the whole world.
We each have “that song” that instantly transports us, opens doors, floods us with meaning, and when we share them, we see just how connected we are.
Please share your musical memories.
