Love the Earth We Live On

by Michael Feeley
I woke up today thinking about the Earth because it is Earth Day, and the welfare of the Earth matters to me. I remember Earth Day first being celebrated on April 22, 1970, to bring awareness about caring for and protecting the Earth. Many events are taking place today around the world to celebrate our Earth.
As an avid gardener for more than 60 years, I feel a sacred and profoundly happy bond with the earth.
I think of many people who speak about gardens; their words always inspire me.
Landscape designer Julie Moir Messervy is one of them, and she fervently describes the reason people garden:
“I have found, through years of practice, that people garden in order to make something grow; to interact with nature; to share, to find sanctuary, to heal, to honor the earth, to leave a mark. Through gardening we feel whole as we make our personal mark of art upon our land.”
Another is Gandhi, who draws this parallel:
“To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves.”
And these surprising words by playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan:
“Won’t you come into the garden? I would like my roses to see you.”
I also think of the relationship between gardening and coaching, and this principle I learned while training to be a career and life coach:
“We either grow or die… Life is a continuous growing process… growing is what coaching is all about. Coaches are always looking for ways to grow themselves and help their clients grow. Death is not what happens to us at the end of our physical expression; it occurs anytime in our life when we choose stagnation.” – iPEC – Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching.
Where do you honor the Earth in your life and work?
