In and Out of Hibernation

by Michael Feeley
With the arrival of Spring (in various parts of the world), I see animals and plants coming out of hibernation after being inactive and dormant during the winter months. Bees, Bats, groundhogs, squirrels, roses, tulips, hydrangeas, daylilies, ferns.
Hibernation comes from the Latin word – to pass the Winter. It’s a natural form and choice for reclusion, resting, and slowing down.
How do humans hibernate, retreat, refresh, renew, regenerate, and reframe ourselves?
Sometimes hibernation is for a healthy, good reason, and other times, not. Perhaps the emotional and physical retreating is to heal from trauma or to hide, avoid, remove, or run away.
Formal retreats (some vacations also) can be for learning, growth, and returning to the essence of who you are and what you value most in your life. Not to escape.
Meditation and forms of Yoga, even exercise, are the same: to relax, center yourself, and feel rejuvenated.
Where do you hibernate, and what is the reason?
