Good Greed
by Michael Feeley
What if we’ve been wrong about greed?
Not all of it—the destructive kind deserves every criticism it gets. The accumulation without purpose. The insatiable hunger for more titles, more money, more control. The kind of vindictive greed that burns relationships and sells out your deepest values for another zero in the bank account. That greed makes you colder, less grateful, perpetually unsatisfied, no matter what you achieve.
But what about the other kind?
There’s a greed worth cultivating: an insatiable appetite for growth, for learning, for helping others thrive. Driving yourself to be just and fair to other people and things. To be vindictive with goodwill.
A hunger to build something meaningful—not just for yourself, but for the community around you. This is the employer who’s “greedy” for loyal, fulfilled employees and creates real pathways for them to prosper. The leader who’s ravenous for win-win deals where everyone walks away better than they arrived. Creating meaningful change.
This good greed asks: What if I was as hungry to develop myself as others are to accumulate possessions? What if I couldn’t get enough of making a genuine difference?
The question isn’t whether you should pursue financial security—of course you should. The question is: what are you willing to sacrifice to get it?
Destructive greed costs you everything that matters. Your integrity. Your relationships. Your peace. You become calculating and manipulative by what you think you’re controlling.
But good greed? It compounds differently. The more you grow, the more capacity you have to help others grow. The more you give, the more grateful you become for what you have and what you can offer. It’s a hunger that actually satisfies. Makes you feel proud.
If you’re reading this feeling exhausted by what you’ve been chasing, that’s your answer. You’re on the wrong greedy path.
So here’s the invitation:
What are you greedy for?
How well is it working for you?
Go ahead—be wild with greed. Just make sure it’s the kind that makes you more human, not less.
