Free Choice
by Michael Feeley
IT SEEMS EVIDENT that we always have a choice.
Why not make it more relevant and conscious where you notice your ability to make a choice and ask:
“What is my choice, my attitude, my decision here?”
Three people often come to my mind when I think about the freedom, power, courage, and the tremendous gift of choice.
Black civil rights activist Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in 1955.
“I knew someone had to take the first step, and I made up my mind not to move.”
Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl, who lived through horrific life conditions.
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing. The last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude
in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
South African anti-apartheid activist and politician Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison.
“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and
hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”
